Feeling sad? Wishing you felt more optimistic? The following mood boosters will help improve your emotional health.
Find a form of exercise you like. You'll be surprised at how even less than thirty minutes of exercise a day can act as a mild antidepressant. Experiment until you find a form of exercise (or two or three) that you like enough to want to do. You'll discover how exercise can tone you up and help you feel more optimistic over all.
Spend time with other people. We are social creatures, and we need emotional attachments to others. Reach out to a coworker, a friend, a neighbor, or a family member and spend time doing something together. If work has been taking on too big of a role in your life, take some time off and spend it with someone who makes you feel better.
Give a chuckle. Believe it or not, laughing helps you feel better. Read a funny book, watch a funny movie, go to a funny play, or joke around with someone you love. Research local laughter therapy centers. No kidding! Laughter therapy is a real practice, and people seem to benefit greatly from them.
Give yourself a nutritional boost with vitamins D and B and a bit of Saint John's Wort. Your body may need the supplemental boost. All of these vitamins and supplements support emotional health. Be careful with Saint John's Wort if you have allergies, though; talk to your doctor first.
Consider seeing a therapist. Sometimes we just need a safe space to spill it all, and a therapist can give you suggestions that will be tailored to your life situation. Your insurance will most likely cover several visits, and it often just takes a visit or two to get perspective and make a plan.
Insist on protecting your emotional health. Your emotional health is interconnected with your physical health, and both of these affect your relationships. Take care of yourself!
