Do you know what the number one cause of childhood obesity is? Time spent in front of the television, snacking, is one of the primary causes of obesity. If your child comes home from school and plops himself down in front of the TV, you’re setting him up for a lifetime of weight problems. Try at least half the things on this list of activities that may get your kid up and going.

Register your kid for an organized sport. Teach your child how to hit a tennis ball. Find a community volleyball team. A running club. Anything that gets your child up and moving counts.

Set up a scavenger hunt. Talk ahead of time with neighbors and come up with a list of things all over the area the kids have to find.

Borrow a neighbor’s dog. You can always teach your child how to be a generous citizen by asking them to volunteer to walk the neighbor's dog.

Gather together a bunch of neighbor kids for a big, multi-property hide and seek game. Younger teens may think it's fun to try flashlight tag after dusk.

Buy outdoor games such as crochet, horseshoes, and badminton. Put up the game in the yard and have your relatives over for an outdoor game day.

Set up a jump rope competition. Have more than one type available; have individual competitions using Chinese jump ropes, short ropes, and long ropes where many people jump at once. Give out inexpensive prizes, like bubbles or silly string.

Find summer camps that will keep your child active. Check out your community website or paper for inexpensive, fun programs.

Put your child in charge of mowing the lawn. Most kids can take over at least half the yard by age ten.

Show the kids how to play Twister. See who is the most flexible of the bunch.

Take your child for a hike or after-dinner stroll. Or a bike ride. Or to shoot baskets with you. If you use exercise as a way to spend time with your children, they'll be more eager to participate. Set a good example and watch the kids get into it too!
